As the sun sets over SeaWorld San Diego, the aquarium park transforms into a chilling playground for its 5th annual Howl-O-Scream.

Fog creeps across pathways, sinister laughter echoes in the distance, and haunted houses lure the brave inside now through Nov. 1.

Visitors can also enjoy rollercoasters, themed cocktails flowing at six immersive bars, the “Monster Stomp” musical, and those in the know can uncover five hidden speakeasies tucked throughout the mazes.

At the helm of this spooky spectacle is SeaWorld’s Vice President of Entertainment Kira Lang, who oversees the creative strategy and execution behind Howl-O-Scream.

From designing haunted houses to orchestrating scare zones, Lang and her team craft an experience that’s equal parts terrifying and fun. We had a Q&A to get a peek behind the screams.

Q: What makes this year’s Howl-O-Scream unique from past events?

This marks our fifth year of fear, and we’ve taken everything we’ve learned from past seasons to make 2025 the most thrilling yet. Whether you’re a longtime fan or a first-time guest, you’ll find more to scream about than ever before: expanded scare zones, additional hidden speakeasies, extra themed bars, and an upgraded menu packed with hauntingly good bites and drinks.

Q: How do you decide which themes make the cut each year? Do you lean more on trends, guest feedback, or your team’s imagination?

We evaluate based on guest feedback and imagination. All houses and scare zones are designed by our Entertainment and Theming teams. We work as a team to come up with concepts for each of the above. Once a house concept and storyline are designed, the team creates and designs character profiles and staging for each role, we will work with our costume shop on designs and make-up artists on their final looks.

The vile vignettes this year are based on pathway characters and scare zones from previous years that quickly became guest favorites. We saw guests really enjoy the engagement of the characters and this year we wanted to feature them in a unique way.

Q: What’s something most people don’t realize about the planning and detail that goes into building a scare zone?

Designing a scare zone is like choreographing a living nightmare—it’s incredibly strategic. Every path, prop, and shadow is placed with purpose, creating hidden pockets where scare actors can appear from unexpected angles. The goal is to keep guests guessing at every turn, because the best scare is always the one you never see coming.

Q: For a first-time visitor, what’s the can’t-miss part of Howl-O-Scream?

This is San Diego’s largest Halloween nighttime event. It’s a big party! The atmosphere is fun, it is high energy and the best part is that this event can be the entire evening. There are so many offerings that it takes a few hours or more to get through all the haunted houses, scare zones, coasters in the dark, vile vignettes, musical performance and live entertainment, plus food and drink stations throughout.

Q: Do you design with repeat visitors in mind so there’s always something fresh to scream about?

We strive to provide a fun and entertaining haunt event, each year we have a mix of returning fan-favorites, while also bringing in new elements, whether it be new additions to houses, or brand-new scare zones.

Q: We hear there are hidden speakeasies tucked inside some of the haunted houses. Without giving away too much, can you share how guests might stumble upon these secret spots?

Yes, new this year, every haunted house has a unique speakeasy, themed to the house. The password is shared on Instagram the weekend of the event. Guests should also look for an orange projected skull image on a door and an Ambassador nearby to whisper the password to.

Q: Do you have a favorite hidden detail or Easter egg inside the houses or scare zones that most people miss?

Alien 64

Q: For guests who really want to maximize their Howl-O-Scream experience, what insider tips would you share; like the best times to visit, can’t-miss paths, or special add-ons?

Catch the opening “SCARemony” to set the mood, then head straight toward the back of the park while most visitors linger near the entrance. Working your way forward means shorter lines and more scares with less waiting. Another pro move: ride the coasters in the dark early, before the crowds shift from haunted houses to thrill rides. It’s the perfect way to pack in every scream-worthy moment.

Q: Which haunted house or scare zone is your personal favorite this year, and why?

My pick for the scariest house has to be Simon’s Slaughterhouse—it never fails to deliver heart-pounding moments. For scare zones, I’m especially excited about Overgrowth, a brand-new addition for 2025. It’s designed like an eerie greenhouse, and our performers wear ghillie suits that blend seamlessly into the foliage, creating the perfect jump-scare. And for entertainment, you can’t miss Monster Stomp—a high-energy mash-up of music and dance that’s an absolute 10 out of 10.

Perched above the shimmering Dana Point coastline, Lantern’s Edge at Laguna Cliffs Marriott offers more than just breathtaking views. By day, the restaurant boasts panoramic vistas of the harbor and ocean. By night, it transforms into a cozy, elegant retreat, where the ambiance rivals the natural beauty outside.

Helmed by Chef de Cuisine Kristine Davis, formerly of the Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel, Lido House, and Miami Beach Edition, Lantern’s Edge delivers a menu that masterfully blends Mediterranean and California classics. Davis, drawing inspiration from her Filipino heritage, infuses subtle yet striking flavors into her creations.

“I sneak in a lot of Filipino flavors in there, which are very subtle, but the various seasonings are hints of where I come from,” said Davis, whose culinary artistry is evident in every dish.

The restaurant’s outdoor patio, complete with heat lamps, fire pits, and weekend live music, invites diners to linger under the stars. Inside, the coastal-chic dining room features large windows that frame the ocean views, a full bar, a sleek fish tank, and a mix of formal tables and plush lounge seating, creating a setting that is both sophisticated and inviting.

A Menu to Savor

Lantern’s Edge offers a menu filled with dishes that delight both the palate and the senses. The culinary journey begins with standout appetizers such as the Dynamite Oysters, available hot or Rockefeller style, and the Burrata Dip, featuring peach Meyer jam, walnut crumble, and sourdough toast.

Among the entrees, the Grilled Maitake shines as a hidden gem. The smoked whipped feta, Fresno vinaigrette, and bonito flakes complement the earthy mushrooms, making it a dish that’s as unique as it is flavorful. The Branzino, served with guajillo piperade, celeriac soubise, and confit leek, balances delicate textures with bold flavors. For pasta lovers, the Seafood Orecchiette impresses with house-made charcoal-infused pasta, prawns, scallops, clams, and calamari in a lobster bisque base.

To complement the culinary offerings, Lantern’s Edge presents a thoughtfully curated cocktail menu. Highlights include the Pinkies Up, a refreshing mix of Casa Dragones Blanco Tequila, Lo-Fi Amaro, lime juice, pamplemousse liqueur, grapefruit soda, and agave. For those who enjoy a smoky kick, the Smoke n’ Spice blends Del Maguey Vida Mezcal, ginger syrup, lemon juice, chile liqueur, orange bitters, blackberries, and fresh jalapeño. The tropical Cliff Diver offers a blend of Myer’s Dark Rum, coconut cream, pineapple juice, nutmeg, orange, and cherry, evoking coastal vibes in every sip. For a unique twist on a classic, the Banana Vardier pairs WhistlePig Bourbon with Amaro, Giffard Banane du Brésil liqueur, and Amontillado sherry for a rich, complex flavor profile.

Dessert at Lantern’s Edge is not to be missed. The Ube Sans Rival, a gluten-free twist on a traditional Filipino treat, is as light as it is delectable, offering a sweet, satisfying end to a memorable meal.

A Coastal Haven

Lantern’s Edge embodies the best of Dana Point’s laid-back luxury. Whether you’re sipping a cocktail by the fire pit or indulging in Chef Davis’ culinary creations, this restaurant is a destination in itself. With its mix of exceptional cuisine, stunning views, and warm hospitality, Lantern’s Edge promises a memorable dining experience.

Irvine just got a lot tastier. On Tuesday, October 15th, Galpão Gaucho Brazilian Steakhouse officially opened its doors with a ribbon-cutting event that was as grand as the flavors it serves.

The event was a true celebration of Brazilian tradition and mouthwatering cuisine, with guests treated to tantalizing slices of the steakhouse’s famed offerings. From beautifully grilled meats to golden bites of indulgence, this opening was just a teaser of the feast awaiting Orange County diners.

Guests mingled around a stunning display of charcuterie, sipped on fine wines and cocktails, and savored each bite of the various meats.

The real showstopper? The iconic 24-karat golden steak, a must-see luxurious dish. This steak isn’t just grilled to perfection; it’s wrapped in edible gold, offering a luxurious twist to your meal without any extra cost. It’s served sizzling on a Himalayan salt block, and sliced with a golden knife.

But this was only a sneak peek. Now, foodies and curious newcomers alike can experience the full rodizio spread, with big chops ready to be sliced right at their table by skilled gauchos.

A Taste of Brazil in Irvine

The Irvine location is Galpão Gaucho’s eighth in the U.S. and continues the restaurant’s legacy of delivering an authentic Brazilian dining experience. Inspired by the traditional meals of the Brazilian cowboys, or gauchos, this family-owned gem offers an all-you-can-enjoy rodizio experience featuring 18 expertly grilled meats.

Beef, chicken, pork, lamb, and seafood— the restaurant is a carnivore’s dream, complemented by a gourmet salad bar with over 45 delicious items, including various fruits and cheeses.

Flipping the Card

The steakhouse’s signature Picanha cut—offering buttery, tender slices of sirloin—is a must-try. The bacon-wrapped filet mignon and chicken were also delicious. Seafood fans can dive into juicy shrimp and grilled salmon.

There’s even caramelized pineapple for a sweet, smoky surprise – it tasted almost like a fresh apple pie. The unlimited meats, salads, and sides come with a simple flip of a card. Turn it green for more meats to arrive tableside or flip it red to take a breather and enjoy each savory bite.

Welcome to the Neighborhood, Galpão Gaucho

Located at 1830 Main St, near John Wayne Airport, the new Irvine restaurant blends rustic charm with modern sophistication. Warm wood accents, stone details, and cozy corners create an inviting atmosphere.

The lively atmosphere features a full bar with signature cocktails and wines (and large TV streaming sports games), a private dining room perfect for special events, and an expansive main space that can seat up to 350 guests.

Whether one is looking to indulge in an epic feast of Brazilian meats or want to sip on a Caipirinha and enjoy a casual bite, Galpão Gaucho is ready to serve. Their hours offer plenty of opportunities to experience their traditional dishes, with weekday lunch and dinner, plus weekend feasting.

Walking into the brand-new Warehouse 72 at the Hyatt Regency Irvine feels like stepping into a whole new world—one where art, design, and dining come together in a vibrant and immersive experience.

Your eyes are immediately drawn to the 30-foot LED digital art installation, a dynamic display of 3D visuals that range from crashing waves to serene beach sunsets and even wine glasses being filled in larger-than-life detail. This is Orange County’s latest upscale dining destination, where modern American cuisine meets an avant-garde atmosphere.

Warehouse 72 – Irvine Hyatt Regency

Founded by local restaurateur Doug Pak, Warehouse 72 embodies three core elements: modern art, modern design, and a modern American menu. And boy, do those elements come to life as you step inside. The interior is a vision in white—white walls, white chairs, white tiles—like dining in the clouds. Pak calls it the “elegance of angels,” a nod to the angelic symbolism of the number 72.

Spanning 6,200 square feet, the restaurant offers a variety of dining options, from intimate tables and cozy booths to private spaces perfect for corporate gatherings. The outdoor patio adds to the allure with banquette seating, lounge areas, and a fire pit that beckons you to relax and unwind.

The modern design of the space is just as captivating, with natural light flooding in through open-air windows and live plants bringing a touch of nature to the chic surroundings. A raw stone bar top adds a rustic yet refined touch, perfectly in tune with the health-conscious vibe of the venue.

But let’s talk about the real star—the food. The modern American menu is as thoughtfully crafted as the space itself, with dishes that elevate classic flavors with innovative twists.

The cocktails are as beautiful as they are delicious, each one garnished to perfection. Highlights include the vodka-based Arancia Fresco, the gin-infused Salt & Pepper, and the refreshingly floral Cucumber Elixir.

Dinner kicked off with a market salad that’s a feast for both the eyes and the palate, loaded with golden raisins, fresh blueberries, sunflower seeds, dried apricots, almonds, and a zesty lemon vinaigrette.

For the main event, the Double Ranch Signature Filet Frites impresses with an 8 oz beef filet, salmoriglio steak butter, hand-cut fries, and black truffle aioli. Equally enticing is the Peruvian Roasted Jidori Chicken, served with spiced crispy marble potatoes, grilled broccolini, aji verde, micro cilantro, and fresh lime.

And just when you think the experience can’t get any better, dessert arrives—a tableside-torched Frozen S’more, with graham cracker crust, chocolate ice cream, and marshmallow, offering a sweet finale to an unforgettable meal.

Warehouse 72 opens to the public on Thursday, August 15. The restaurant is located at Hyatt Regency Irvine, 17900 Jamboree Rd., Irvine, CA.

On July 7, 1972, the Fraser family opened their first Mexican food restaurant, Don Jose Mexican Restaurant, in Orange, California. The establishment quickly became known for its simple, fresh, and authentic dishes, crafted by expert cooks from Jalisco, Mexico.

The restaurant’s origins trace back to founders Roderick and Patricia Fraser. Rod, a World War II veteran pilot from Oregon, and Patricia, a local from Orange, married in 1944 and rode the wave of the post-war economic boom. By the 1960s, restaurants had become the family’s main business venture.

With the help of their eldest son, Rick, the Frasers expanded their presence, opening locations throughout Orange County and the Inland Empire. In 2017, the Fraser family consolidated all Don Jose restaurants under a new brand, Rodrigo’s Mexican Grill, in honor of their late father, Rod.

Today, Rodrigo’s Mexican Grill remains a family-owned and operated business, with seven siblings and 25 third-generation cousins actively involved. Locations include Orange, Corona, Huntington Beach, Anaheim, Anaheim Hills, Laguna Hills, Tustin, Montclair, Riverside and Temecula.

Melinda Fraser, granddaughter of Fraser and Rodrigo’s Social Media Manager, said the restaurant’s “employees and customers are just as much family as the relatives.” Rodrigo’s Mexican Grill prides itself on its dedicated employees, many of whom have risen through the ranks to top management positions, becoming part of the Fraser’s extended family.

Culinary Tour

Fraser accompanied Backstage SoCal at the Corona location with a fiery passion for her family’s brand and food. This Father’s Day on June 16, the restaurant will offer an all-day Happy Hour and several special menu items, including the “Big Daddy Burger” which includes a double beef patty, cheese, pickles, sauce, lettuce, and topped with a roasted jalapeno with steak fries on the side.

Rodrigo’s Mexican Grill offers a delightful culinary experience that blends authentic Mexican flavors with fresh, local ingredients. The menu boasts an array of delicious dishes, starting with the sizzling fajitas, a customer favorite. The fajitas are a symphony of flavors and textures, served piping hot with perfectly seasoned meats and a vibrant medley of sautéed vegetables.

Another standout dish is the Baja fish tacos. These tacos feature crispy, golden-brown fish fillets topped with a refreshing slaw and a tangy crema, all nestled in soft, warm tortillas. The combination of fresh seafood and zesty toppings makes for a memorable bite.

For those seeking a lighter option, the Caesar salad at Rodrigo’s does not disappoint. Made with crisp romaine lettuce, avocados, corn, tomatoes, black beans, and beets, the salad is elevated by a tangy dressing that ties all the components together perfectly.

Rodrigo’s drink menu is equally impressive. The Mariachi Margarita is a refreshing twist on the classic, with a balanced blend of tequila, lime, and a hint of orange liqueur. The Espresso Martini offers a rich, robust flavor, perfect for those who enjoy a caffeinated kick with their cocktail.

The Mezcal a La Antigua Old Fashioned provides a smoky take on a timeless drink, while the Paloma delivers a refreshing and citrusy punch, ideal for warm evenings.

Dessert at Rodrigo’s is a must-try. The Kahlua Fudge Mudd Pie is a decadent treat, with layers of rich fudge and a hint of coffee liqueur. The Deep Fried Ice Cream is a nostalgic favorite, featuring a crispy, golden shell encasing a scoop of velvety ice cream. The fresh house-made churros, dusted with cinnamon sugar and served with a dipping sauce, are the perfect sweet ending to a fantastic meal.

The upscale-yet-relaxed restaurant sources fresh seafood from local and international waters, ensuring a diverse and top-tier menu. The Costa Mesa location continues this tradition, drawing in locals and visitors alike with its various seafood from Australia to the Baja coast and everywhere in between.

Warm wood tones, elegant lighting, and tasteful maritime decor create a sophisticated yet relaxed environment. The spacious dining area accommodates both intimate dinners and larger gatherings, making it an ideal spot for any occasion.

Personal Touch: My Go-To Spot

For me, Water Grill Costa Mesa has been a cherished spot where I’ve enjoyed countless memorable moments with friends and colleagues over the years. It’s perfect for business lunches, where the refined atmosphere and delicious menu make every meeting relaxed and enjoyable. Before catching a show at the nearby Segerstrom Center for the Arts or South Coast Repertory, I’ve often indulged in dinner or a drink to set the stage for a nice evening at the theater.

But Water Grill isn’t just about special occasions or business meetings. Sometimes, it’s about the simple pleasure of enjoying a solo burger at the lively bar while watching the game. The restaurant’s two bars are always bustling with energy, making it a great spot to unwind and soak in the vibrant ambiance.

Just yesterday, my colleagues and I had an exceptional dining experience that exemplifies why Water Grill is one of my go-to spots. I started with a Bristol Street cocktail, a refreshing blend of vodka, strawberries, lemon, and tarragon served on the rocks. For appetizers, I savored the Bluefin Toro Tartare, beautifully complemented by green tea nori, warm sushi rice, a quail egg, and sweet soy sauce. I was also treated to an off-menu item: the Whole Fish Pink Bream Ceviche, a vibrant dish showcasing the chef’s creativity.

For my main course, I indulged in the Wild Columbia River King Salmon, perfectly cooked and paired with heirloom carrots and vadouvan curry butter. To celebrate International Burger Day, I also enjoyed a Bacon Cheddar Cheeseburger, topped with caramelized chipotle mayonnaise and served with crispy french fries. Each dish was a testament to the restaurant’s dedication to quality and flavor.

Commitment to Sustainability

One of the standout features of Water Grill is its dedication to sustainability. The restaurant works closely with sustainable fisheries and follows best practices to ensure that their seafood is not only fresh but also responsibly sourced. This commitment to environmental stewardship resonates with many diners who are increasingly conscious of their ecological footprint.

Exceptional Service

Water Grill Costa Mesa is not just about great food; it’s about a complete dining experience. The staff is known for their professionalism and attention to detail, ensuring that every guest feels welcome and well-cared for. From the moment you step through the doors to the last bite of dessert, the service is attentive, adding to the overall experience.

Water Grill Costa Mesa stands out as a beacon of seafood excellence in Orange County. Its commitment to quality, sustainability, and exceptional service make it a must-visit for anyone seeking a top-tier dining experience. Whether one is a local or a visitor, a meal at Water Grill is a must-stop for seafood lovers or a burger upgrade. For me, it’s a place where business, pleasure, and the joy of fine dining have come together time and time again.

From a traditional Southern Brazilian farm in the Serra Gaúch to expanding to over 60 establishments throughout the United States, Fogo de Chão has made its mark in exquisite cuisine.

Now, the internationally-renowned restaurant opened its third Orange County location in Brea on Dec. 4. Located directly across from the Brea Mall, the restaurant offers an outdoor dining patio, diverse wine cases, a full bar and a lively, upscale atmosphere.

For its first week, Fogo is donating a portion of its sales to Pathways of Hope, a local nonprofit organization that provides access to food, shelter, and housing to those experiencing hunger and homelessness in North Orange County.

Fairly different from the establishment’s original restaurant – which was built of a wood structure and nestled in the countryside of Porto Alegre – the Brea restaurant was designed in partnership with architecture and design agency Innovation & Design in Architecture.

The layout features a large dining room with an open churrasco grill that allows guests to watch chefs demonstrate the culinary art of Churrasco as they butcher, prepare and grill different meat cuts over an open flame.

A white Carrara marble Market Table is featured in the large dining room and is well-stocked with a variety of fresh vegetables, salads and cold meats and cheeses. The restaurant also has dry-aged meat lockers for in-house aging which, especially when it comes to Brazilian food, makes all the difference in flavors and tenderness.

The signature meat cuts feature everything from Picanha and Alcatra top sirloin, steak asado, lamb chops, leg of lamb, and filet mignon — all sliced table-side.

A spirited indoor Bar Fogo area is also showcased in the new spot. Guests can enjoy all-day happy hour and private dining spaces to reserve for any occasion.

While Orange County houses two other locations in Huntington Beach and Irvine, the new Brea restaurant is in a dynamic spot off State College Boulevard, with a beautiful design and food and drink offerings that are worth the visit.

Meet Skylar Brandt: ABT’s new princess in ‘The Nutcracker’ https://backstagesocal.com/thenutcracker/ https://backstagesocal.com/thenutcracker/#respond Thu, 02 Dec 2021 21:46:52 +0000 https://backstagesocal.com/?p=2762 American Ballet Theatre's "The Nutcracker" returns to Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa on Dec. 10-19.

The dazzling, endearing holiday tradition presented by the renowned American Ballet Theatre, The Nutcracker, returns to Segerstrom Center for the Arts on Dec. 10-19 for 12 performances.

Based on The Nutcracker and the King of Mice by E.T.A. Hoffmann and scored by legendary composer Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovsky, the beloved Christmas ballet features ABT’s international superstars. This year marks the 6th time The Center will present the glorious production.

ABT dancer Skylar Brandt will make her debut as the primary role of Clara, the Princess in The Nutcracker. Her exceptional dance career began when she was just six years old at Scarsdale Ballet Studio in New York. She attended Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School at American Ballet Theatre from 2005-2009 under the direction of Franco De Vita, spent five summers at ABT’s New York Summer Intensive, and was a National Training Scholar receiving the Bender Foundation Scholarship in 2009 and a silver medal at Youth America Grand Prix in 2004 and 2008.

Brandt is thrilled to make her debut as Clara on the Segerstrom Hall stage.

Have you performed in The Nutcracker before? If so, where and when?

I have performed “The Nutcracker” so many times! I began at SUNY Purchase college, dancing the role of a baby mouse when I was probably six years old. From there, I played an angel, a party kid and Clara. When I joined ABT, I performed as one of the dolls, a snowflake, a flower, the Chinese dance and one of Nutcracker’s sisters. It has been a lot of fun to delve into so many characters within the same story ballet.

How long have you been dancing?

I have been dancing for a little over 20 years. It has gone by in a blink of an eye!

What does it mean to you to be a part of this renowned production?

I especially enjoy this version of “The Nutcracker” because it is different from most of the classic Nutcracker productions out there. In our production, it’s not just the tree that grows; the furniture and the mice grow too. Our Waltz of the Flowers includes bumble bees. The entire second act centers around Clara’s dream of growing up and getting married to her Nutcracker Prince. The production comes full circle which gives it a really human quality that I appreciate.

What dance number is your favorite, and why?

So far, my favorite role in ABT’s version of “The Nutcracker” has been the Chinese dance. The choreography is fast and exciting and the music is whimsical and charming. It’s always a crowd pleaser, so it’s fun to perform.

Why is this particular production special to you?

This production holds a special place in my heart because it is the first ballet I performed with ABT when I joined the company as an Apprentice eleven years ago. I have many nostalgic feelings attached to my experiences rehearsing and performing it all these many years.

What are you most excited for the audience to experience this year?

Going to see “The Nutcracker” is such a classic family tradition during the holiday season, I’m happy for the audience to be able to experience the magic of it again after a year off. I think that the performances will be appreciated even more this year after the pandemic.

What do you want people to know about this production?

I’d like people to understand how difficult the choreography is in Ratmansky’s production of “The Nutcracker”. Naturally, our job as dancers is to make the choreography look completely effortless, but it is the exact opposite. I think that it would give the audience even more appreciation for the production knowing how much effort and skill is required from everyone to perform it!

8 memorable moments with Kristin Chenoweth: Segerstrom Center https://backstagesocal.com/kristinchenoweth/ https://backstagesocal.com/kristinchenoweth/#respond Sun, 24 Oct 2021 23:35:48 +0000 https://backstagesocal.com/?p=2746 Memorable moments from Kristin Chenoweth's one-night-only concert at Segerstrom Center for the Arts on Oct. 23.

Emmy and Tony Award-winning powerhouse Kristin Chenoweth ignited the Segerstrom Hall’s stage in her one-night-only performance in Costa Mesa on Oct. 23. The evening was filled with a selection of songs from her recent album, “For the Girls,” along with tribute tunes and Broadway hits — leaving her Orange County audience misty-eyed and in awe of the powerful pipes that came out of her 4-foot-11 frame.

Here are 8 notable highlights of the evening:

  1. In true SoCal style, the Oklahoma-bred Chenoweth drank from a large In-N-Out cup throughout the show, stating the fast food joint is a “must” when she is in town.
  2. She shared in excitement that her former professor was in attendance, and is a current professor at Chapman University. At one point she asked, “Where are my Chapman students at?” which received cheers throughout the venue. In true mentor style, she gave advice, pointed out vocal ranges, and even pointed out mistakes on her part to the students throughout the performance.
  3. Her guitarist Josh Bryant took center stage with her to perform the Eagles’ rock ballad “Desperado.” At the end of the song, she leaned over and planted a smooch on the 38-year-old, snickering and saying, “I didn’t tell you how well I knew him.”
  4. Before she sang a beautiful rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” she dedicated it to her dear friend, OC arts philanthropist Julia Argyros, who was also in the audience. Then she thanked her for buying her lunch at The Capital Grille earlier that day.
  5. She paid homage to Julie Andrews, Judy Garland, Betty Buckley, and several Broadway stars that have influenced her throughout her flourishing career.
  6. She made it Christmas in October, singing “(Everybody’s Waitin’ For) The Man With The Bag/Jingle Bell Rock” from her new holiday album, Happiness is…Christmas! released on Oct. 22.
  7. She shared her love for binge-watching crime documentaries, Bravo’s Real Housewives series, and the Britney Spears documentary throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. After she saw the Spears’ doc, she jokingly said she called Britney up to offer her some advice, before belting out her iconic Wicked tune “Popular,” with anecdotes for Britney in between.
  8. Not a dry eye was left in the house when she concluded the concert with a breathtaking rendition of “Smile,” sung entirely without her microphone.

After the past year-and-a-half void of live concerts and performances, Chenoweth was a pro at carrying her audience from beginning to end with a lighthearted yet sentimental performance that allowed everyone to reflect on how much the arts are truly needed.

If you live an active lifestyle, you probably already have your favorite place to work up a sweat. Maybe it’s the local hiking trails or the cool new fitness complex that opened up. When you move to a new place, it’s an adjustment in every area of your life, including your personal fitness. Backstage SoCal shares these Orange County activities to keep your heart pumping.

Active Fun in the Sun

Exercising doesn’t have to be boring, but sometimes it feels that way when you’ve done the same workout day after day. Getting outside is one way to beat that boredom. Now that you call

Orange County home, you can find plenty of activities to do under the sun that will give you a good workout. Here are some of the best ways to get outside and get your body moving.

Surfing and Paddleboarding

Huntington Beach offers lovely beaches where you can fish and learn to paddleboard. Don’t be afraid to get creative and try new things. For instance, if you’ve never been surfing or kitesurfing before, consider taking surfing lessons here. Several beaches in the Orange County area also offer classes for all ages, and it’s a great workout for the entire body.

Horseback Riding

Riding on horseback works your entire core, so it’s a wonderful workout for your back, pelvic area, and abs. It’s also something you can do with the entire family, making it a perfect activity for the weekend that will allow you to have fun while getting in shape.

Dog Walking

It can be difficult for new arrivals to the city to find time to workout amid crazy work schedules, so combining exercise with daily activities is ideal. Dogs need lots of exercise, so you can use your time wisely and find activities for both of you to do daily. This can include hiking, running along the beach, or walking through one of the many dog-friendly parks in Orange County.

Sites like OCDogFriendly.com not only list outdoor and indoor locations that welcome dogs, they also recommend adoption locations. If you are new to the city and don’t have a furry friend, why not adopt and learn about your new home together. After that workout, you can even grab a bite to eat at one of Orange County’s many dog friendly restaurants.

Take in Some History

There are plenty of historic locations in Orange County, and these are great places to get in some activity while learning about the amazing past of the place you now call home. Heritage Hill Historical Park and Founder’s Park offer several historical sites, such as the area’s oldest homes and churches and authentic adobes. Put on some comfortable shoes and get ready for an education while you put in your steps for the day.

Hiking

Orange County is famous for its gorgeous beaches with hiking trails, and there are several with different levels of difficulty. If you’re an experienced hiker, try Whiting Ranch, Santiago Canyon, and Ortega Highway. For easier trails, try Crystal Cove State Park, San Clemente, or of course, Huntington Beach.

With so much to do outdoors, you are sure to find ways to keep in shape. Not only that, you may make some new friends along the way. Orange County is not only a great place to stay active, but have tons of fun as well. You don’t have to wait until you are done unpacking. Get out there, explore, and have fun in your new home.
